Good Saturday morning, It is a busy birdy-one here this morning. The “early bird” is the Annas Hummingbird coming into the feeder before the pesky Rufous awakes so it can have a quiet morning sip without having to go into jet maneuvers to eat.
The Calliope Hummingbird has just arrived March 19th. A pair of these usually stays for about 6 weeks then heads up to the mountains to nest. I haven’t seen the female yet.
The usual breakfast bunch arrives at sun-up, White-breasted Nuthatch, Gold Crowned Sparrows, House Finches, Cassin Finches, Gold Finches, Lessor Gold Finches, Oak Titmouse, Blacked Capped Chickadees, Downy Woodpecker, Acorn Woodpecker, Stellar Jay, Scrub Jay, Wild Turkey, Juncos, Spotted Towhees and House Sparrows.
As I sit here typing this I saw a streak of blue fly up into the oak tree. There is a Bluebird checking out the nesting boxes we have all over our 7 acres to see which one it wants to use this year. A nuthatch has layed claim on the one the bluebird seems interested in. There may be a “turf war”!
The Coopers Hawk flew in a little while ago checking out the bird feeders looking for a tastey snack. Warning was spread and little birds disappeared quickly. The Stellar Jay had no fear, his warning squawk sounded up and down the creek as he sat in the tree just below the hawk.
That is a typical Creek Morning.
Looking good… will check in to see how the turf war goes!
