There is one bird that can put a grin on my face every time. That is the Calliope Hummingbird.
It may be the smalllest hummingbird in North America but it doesn’t know that. Both the male and female are still here up the creek in near Gold Hill, Oregon. They nest higher up in the Siskiyous and Cascade Mountain but This pair usually spend about 6 weeks to 2 months here. I have noted this for 4 years.
Yesterday, hubby and I were sitting on our deck enjoying the yard and all the critters that use it when we heard the familar high buzz of Mr. Calliope. He decided to put on a show for the female Calliope at the feeder. For an itty bitty he does everything in grand style. His “show” is more spectacular that the Rufous or Annas. He climbs higher with a slight zig zag then divess his “U” at twice the speed as the other birds. The sound he makes as he dives is like the high pitched irratating buzz of a mosquito flying past your ear. After 2 or 3 times he is finished and proceeds to pester every bird at the feeder. He will even go over the top of another hummer to get to his meal.
