At the end of April - first of May our area blooms with the colorful birds. All are searching for that perfect mate, claiming nest boxes and establishing their territory. Yesterday afternoon I had 4 male Western Tanagers and 7 male Bullock’s Orioles all trying to feed at the jelly feeder. All the birds seem to like the cheapest grape jelly I can find. Grosbeaks, Acorn Woodpeckers, and even a chickadee have used the feeder. I took a walk out back to see what nesting boxes were in use. There were quite a few finches and grosbeaks feeding on the wild grasses and weeds. I did see several Lazuli Buntings which have the most beautiful blue color.
